Can-Am Check Engine Light (Maverick X3, Defender, Commander): How to Read and Reset the Codes

Oct 25, 2026

The yellow engine light comes on and suddenly your side-by-side doesn't feel quite as trustworthy. On a Can-Am Maverick X3, Defender or Commander, the check engine light means one thing at first: a control module spotted a fault and stored a code. The light itself won't tell you what it is. The fault memory will. Here is how to read the code along with its status, what usually causes it in the real world, and when a reset actually sticks.

What the check engine light means on a side-by-side

The light is a catch-all. It tells you that something in the system doesn't add up: a sensor reading out of range, voltage too low, temperature too high, or one module that can no longer hear another. Some faults are harmless and come and go. Others make the ECU pull power to protect the engine, and that's limp mode.

Whether the light stays on, flickers or only pops up for a moment, the real information is in the stored code and its status. Still, take a flashing or recurring light seriously. Ease off, get to a safe spot and read the code there.

Reading Can-Am check engine codes with the app

With M-JET DIAGNOSTIC you don't need a laptop. The dongle plugs into the diagnostic port, your phone connects over Bluetooth, and the app reads the fault memory of the control modules. Depending on the machine, that includes the engine control module (ECM), the gauge cluster, the immobilizer and more.

  1. Key on, open the app, connect to the vehicle.
  2. Read the fault memory of every module, not just the engine.
  3. Write down each code with its plain-language text and status, or take a screenshot.
  4. Don't clear anything yet.

The status is what matters. Active means the fault is present right now. Stored means it happened at some point and was saved. A stored code after a creek crossing tells a different story than an active code that shows up after every cold start. Many codes also come with a possible cause and check steps right in the app.

Common causes on the Maverick X3, Defender and Commander

  • Battery and voltage: A weak battery, loose terminals or a bad ground cause voltage dips. Plenty of modules react with codes that don't look battery related at first glance.
  • Connectors and moisture: Water, mud and salt work their way into connectors. Corrosion makes faults intermittent.
  • Overheating: A packed radiator, slow crawling on the trail, heavy loads. Coolant temperature climbs and the ECU responds.
  • Sensors and harness: Wires rubbed through on the frame, a connector damaged by a branch in the suspension.
  • Ignition and fuel injection: Misfires often show up as a light before you clearly feel them.
  • Turbo models: On the Maverick X3 Turbo, boost pressure faults join the list.

A few examples from the official BRP list: P0562 stands for battery or system voltage too low. P0217 reports coolant overheating, in one variant specifically with torque reduction. P0300 means random or multiple misfires. Many codes carry several meanings depending on the vehicle and module, so the plain-language text from your own machine always beats a list from a forum.

Check first, then reset

Clearing a code in the app takes one tap. But a cleared code is not a repair. If the cause is still there, the light comes back, sometimes within seconds, sometimes on the next hot ride.

  1. Check the battery, terminals and grounds.
  2. Open the connectors near the reported component, check for corrosion and water, dry and reseal them.
  3. Watch live data: battery voltage, engine temperature, throttle, pedal and RPM. If a value jumps when you wiggle the harness, you've found your lead.
  4. If it runs rough, use the component tests: ignition coils and injectors per cylinder, and the fuel pump in three stages.
  5. Fix the cause, clear the codes, take a test ride and read again.

Run tests and resets only with a stable power supply and according to the manufacturer's instructions.

When the light keeps coming back

If the same code returns after every fix, record a test ride with the relevant live values. Often you'll catch the exact moment a voltage drops or a sensor reading goes sideways. If the cause stays unclear even with clean connectors, a good battery and intact wiring, a sensor or a control module may be bad. That's a job for a qualified shop, and your codes and recording give them a head start.

If your machine also drops into limp mode, see Can-Am Defender limp mode. The X3 has its own write-up: Can-Am Maverick X3 limp mode. For reading fault codes without a dealer, see reading Can-Am fault codes without a dealer.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reset the Can-Am check engine light without a scanner?

Without reading the memory, you don't know which fault was stored. Disconnecting the battery doesn't fix anything, and if the cause is still there, the light comes back on.

Why is the light on when there's no code in the ECM?

The fault may be stored in another module, such as the gauge cluster or the immobilizer. That's why you read all of them.

Can I keep riding with the check engine light on?

That depends on the code. Read it before you decide. With overheating or limp mode, wrap up the ride calmly.
