Yamaha Outboard Variable Cam Timing (VCT): OCV and Cam Position Sensor
The engine idles rough, feels flat in the midrange, and the fault memory mentions irregular cam timing. Yamaha calls the system VCT. It rotates the intake camshaft using engine oil metered by an oil control valve, the OCV. With M-JET DIAGNOSTIC you can watch cam timing live, run the OCV on its own depending on the engine, and narrow it down to the valve, the sensor or the oil.
Where you'll find VCT
In the data, variable cam timing starts with the F115 range. On F115 to F150, depending on the ECU, there's one OCV, an intake cam timing value in live data, and fault entries for the cam position sensors on the intake and exhaust side. On the V engines from F175 to F250 and F275 to F450 everything is doubled: VCT, OCV and cam position sensor for the starboard bank (S) and port bank (P), plus two cam timing values. F20 to F100 and the HPDI Z series have no cam phasing in the data.
Three kinds of entries, three approaches
- VCT irregular cam timing: run the OCV actuator test, then read intake cam timing at idle in neutral. It should be at 10 degrees or less. After that, inspect the OCV filter screen.
- OCV irregular load current: check the wiring and connector and measure valve resistance.
- Cam position sensor irregular signal: look at cam timing in live data, check the wiring, measure input and output voltage.
The idle reading tells you a lot
If intake cam timing sits well above 10 degrees in neutral with a warm engine, the cam is staying advanced when it should return. That fits a sticking OCV or a plugged screen, and it explains the rough idle. On V engines, compare S and P. If only one bank is off, you know where to look. During the actuator test you'll hear the OCV click when it responds electrically. If it stays silent, measure resistance and check the wiring.
What can be mechanical
VCT runs on engine oil, so the oil is suspect number one. Low oil, the wrong viscosity or stretched change intervals create sludge that plugs the fine screen in front of the OCV. The screen comes out quickly and cleans up easily. If cam timing shows a constant offset even with a clean valve and screen, the timing chain or belt may be stretched or a tooth off. Only checking the timing marks will tell you that, not the app. After the repair, change the oil, clear the fault memory and take a run while watching cam timing.
