The 1200 4-TEC has a loyal following, and plenty of these sleds are still putting on miles every winter. If you are searching for Ski-Doo 1200 tuning or a Ski-Doo 1200 ECU flash, here is the good news: the 1200s in our overview can be flashed by app with the M-JET Flasher for Ski-Doo and Lynx, and none of them need an ECU unlock. Below you will see exactly which models and model years are listed, what applies to Lynx, and how the flash works.
Which Ski-Doo Sleds With the 1200 4-TEC Are Covered
In our overview, the 1200 4-TEC is listed on the MXZ, Renegade and Grand Touring for model years 2017 and 2018. The Expedition adds 2019. On the Lynx side, it is the 69 Ranger for 2018 through 2020 and the Commander for 2018 and 2019. Here it is at a glance:
| Model | Model years with the 1200 4-TEC | ECU unlock |
|---|---|---|
| Ski-Doo MXZ | 2017-2018 | No |
| Ski-Doo Renegade | 2017-2018 | No |
| Ski-Doo Grand Touring | 2017-2018 | No |
| Ski-Doo Expedition | 2017-2019 | No |
| Lynx 69 Ranger | 2018-2020 | No |
| Lynx Commander | 2018-2019 | No |
A model that does not show up here is not listed with the 1200 4-TEC. That also goes for later model years of the same lineup, where other engines are offered.
MXZ 2017 and 2018
The MXZ is only listed for 2017 and 2018 in our overview. In both years it is listed with the 600 ACE, 900 ACE and 1200 4-TEC, no unlock needed. All the details are on the Ski-Doo MXZ 2017-2018 page.
Renegade and Grand Touring 2017 and 2018
The Renegade and Grand Touring are each listed for 2017 and 2018 with the 600 ACE, 900 ACE and 1200 4-TEC. From 2019, both list the 900 ACE Turbo instead of the 1200 4-TEC, next to the 600 ACE and 900 ACE. So if you have a 2019 Renegade, it is not a 1200 as far as our overview goes.
Expedition: 1200 4-TEC Through 2019
The Expedition is the exception among the Ski-Doo models. Here the 1200 4-TEC is listed for 2017, 2018 and 2019. For 2017 and 2018 the Expedition is listed with the 600 ACE, 900 ACE and 1200 4-TEC, for 2019 with the 600 ACE, 900 ACE, 900 ACE Turbo and 1200 4-TEC. For 2020 the 1200 4-TEC is no longer listed.
Lynx 69 Ranger and Commander With the 1200 4-TEC
Two Lynx models carry the 1200 4-TEC as well. The 69 Ranger is listed for 2018 through 2020 with the 900 ACE and 1200 4-TEC, the Commander for 2018 and 2019 with the same two engines. Neither needs an unlock in those years.
No ECU Unlock Needed
Every sled in the table skips the unlock. On Ski-Doo, the one-time ECU unlock only applies to newer model years, such as the Renegade, Grand Touring and Expedition from 2021, and those are not listed with the 1200 4-TEC. For your 1200 that means: plug in the flasher, pick a stage, flash.
Before You Flash: Confirm Your Engine and Model Year
With the 1200s it pays to double-check, because the same models in the same years are also listed with the 600 ACE and 900 ACE. Sort out three things first:
- Take the model year from your paperwork, not from memory. On the Renegade and Grand Touring, one year decides whether the 1200 4-TEC is listed at all.
- Know your exact engine. The 2019 Expedition is listed with four engines, so make sure you know which one you have.
- Rule out 2-strokes. 2-strokes like the 600R E-TEC and 850 E-TEC, the 850 Turbo included, are not supported.
How the Ski-Doo 1200 ECU Flash Works
The flasher plugs into the diagnostic port, and everything runs from the app on your phone, iOS or Android. No laptop, no shop visit. Here is the job in five steps:
- Plug the flasher into the diagnostic port.
- Open the app and connect it to the flasher.
- Pick a stage. Depending on the model, you get Stage 1 to 4.
- Start the flash and let it run without interruption.
- Unplug the flasher.
You can go back to stock any time. The detailed walkthrough is in Ski-Doo ECU flash by app.
What to Expect From a 1200 Tune
You feel the tune as more power, sharper throttle response and a livelier feel, all controlled and fully reversible. The Lite version is built for software tuning, while the Pro version also gives you diagnostics, live data and codings. If there is a second sled in the garage next to your 1200, you use the same dongle and add it with an additional license. For the 900 ACE models from the same years there is a dedicated post: Ski-Doo 900 ACE tuning. All model pages are under Ski-Doo and Lynx tuning models.
