Before you change the software on your Ski-Doo or Lynx, there is one question a lot of riders only run into at checkout: can the ECU be flashed right away, or does it need an ECU unlock first? The answer has nothing to do with the stage you pick or how you ride. It depends only on the model and the model year. Below is the full list for every sled the M-JET Flasher for Ski-Doo and Lynx covers, plus a few practical notes on how to read it.
What an ECU Unlock Means on a Ski-Doo
Some models need a one-time ECU unlock before the first flash. Once that is done, tuning works the same as on every other model. On the rest of the lineup there is no extra step at all: plug in the flasher, pick a stage, flash.
The unlock options for your sled are shown right in the flasher configurator. This post only answers whether your sled needs the unlock in the first place.
The Short Version: These Models Need the Unlock
- Ski-Doo Renegade, Grand Touring and Expedition: model years 2021 through 2026
- Ski-Doo Skandic: model years 2024 through 2026
- Ski-Doo Tundra: model year 2026
- Ski-Doo Mach Z: model year 2022

- Lynx 59 Ranger: model years 2025 and 2026
- Lynx Xterrain: model years 2021 through 2026

On the Lynx side, that goes for the Xtrim 2018 to 2021, the Yeti 2018 to 2020, the 49 Ranger, 69 Ranger and Commander 2018 to 2022, the 59 Ranger 2021 to 2024, the Adventure 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022, and the 2020 Xterrain.

How to Read the Table
Each model line has one fixed cutoff year. For the Renegade, Grand Touring and Expedition it is 2021, for the Skandic 2024 and for the Tundra 2026. Three things trip people up all the time:
- Model year counts, not purchase date. A 2020 model year Renegade does not need the unlock, even if you bought it later.
- The engine does not change the unlock. Within one model and model year, every listed engine has the same status. A 2023 Renegade needs the unlock with the 600 ACE just like with the 900 ACE or the 900 ACE Turbo.
- Once is enough. The unlock is a one-time step. After that you pick your stage and go back to stock whenever you want, same as on any other model.
What Happens After the Unlock
From here on there is no difference from the models that skip the unlock. The flasher plugs into the diagnostic port and everything is controlled from the app on your phone, iOS or Android. No laptop, no shop visit. Depending on the model you get Stage 1 to 4, and you can go back to the stock calibration at any time. The full walkthrough is in Ski-Doo ECU flash by app.
On the trail you feel it as more power, sharper throttle response and a livelier feel, all controlled and fully reversible. A lot of the unlock models are turbo sleds. For what applies to the 900 ACE Turbo and Turbo R, read Ski-Doo 900 ACE Turbo and Turbo R tuning.
What the Unlock Won't Change: 2-Strokes Are Not Covered
We get asked a lot whether the unlock also makes an 850 E-TEC tunable. It does not. The flasher covers 4-stroke engines only: 600 ACE, 900 ACE, 900 ACE Turbo and 900 ACE Turbo R, plus the 1200 4-TEC in the model years listed in our overview. 2-strokes like the 600R E-TEC and the 850 E-TEC, turbo version included, are not supported. An unlock does not change that.
Lynx: Same Logic, Different Years
On Lynx sleds the cutoff is 2023 for the 49 Ranger, 69 Ranger, Adventure and Commander, 2025 for the 59 Ranger and 2021 for the Xterrain. The Brutal is listed for 2025 and 2026 and needs the unlock in both years. Which engines go with which Lynx model year is covered in Lynx tuning (4-stroke).
One Dongle for Several Sleds
If you have more than one sled in the garage, say a 2019 Skandic without unlock and a 2024 Renegade with unlock, you use the same dongle and add more vehicles with additional licenses. Whether an unlock is needed is decided per model and model year, exactly as in the table. The Pro version also gives you diagnostics, live data and codings, while the Lite version is built for software tuning. All model pages are collected under Ski-Doo and Lynx tuning models.
Frequently asked questions
Does my 2020 Ski-Doo Renegade need an ECU unlock?
No. The Renegade is listed without unlock for 2017 through 2020. The one-time unlock applies to model years 2021 through 2026.
Do I have to repeat the unlock every time I change stages?
No. The unlock is a one-time step. After that you switch stages or go back to stock just like on the models without unlock.
Where do I see the unlock options for my sled?
In the configurator for the M-JET Flasher for Ski-Doo and Lynx. For models that need the unlock, the options are shown right there.
Will the unlock make my 850 E-TEC tunable?
No. 2-strokes, meaning the 600R E-TEC and the 850 E-TEC including the 850 Turbo, are not supported, with or without unlock.
