BRP BUDS Alternative: Diagnostics by App Instead of a Dealer License and Laptop
If you are searching for Can-Am BUDS, BRP BUDS or BUDS2, you are usually stuck with the same problem: a warning light is on, a key is lost or a service reminder will not reset. On the forums the answer is always that nothing works without BUDS. The catch: as an owner, you can hardly get your hands on BUDS. Here is why, and how to handle the everyday work with M-JET DIAGNOSTIC from an app on your phone.
What is BRP BUDS?
BUDS is BRP's diagnostic software for authorized dealers and service shops, available as BUDS, BUDS2 and BUDS3. It is built for running a dealer service department, not for an owner working in the garage.
Why BUDS rarely works for owners
- The license is hard to get. BUDS is meant for the BRP dealer network. For private owners there is no regular official way from BRP to buy a license.
- It gets expensive. You need a laptop, a special interface between the computer and the vehicle, and the license. For one or two machines in your own garage, that rarely pays off.
- No PC, no diagnostics. Every check means opening the laptop, plugging in cables and starting the software. At the dock, on the trail or in subzero temps out in the snow, that gets old fast.
- One missing piece stops everything. Laptop, interface and license all have to work together. If one of them fails, the rest is useless.
That is why most owners haul their machine to the dealer every time a warning light comes on, often just to have a code read.
The alternative: diagnostics by app, no laptop
M-JET DIAGNOSTIC is a small dongle for the diagnostic port plus an app for iOS and Android. It connects over Bluetooth. You buy it once, plug it in and get to work, with no dealer access and no laptop. Licenses are available for 1, 3, 5 or unlimited vehicles.
The tool works with all BRP vehicles: Sea-Doo PWC and jet boats, Can-Am Maverick, Commander, Defender, Traxter, Outlander, Renegade, Spyder, Ryker, Canyon, Pulse and Origin, plus Ski-Doo and Lynx and jet boats with Rotax engines such as Scarab or Williams. The model list on the product page covers 116 models.
- Fault codes: read and clear codes from the ECM, cluster, IMOB, iBR and, depending on the vehicle, other control units. Every code is shown in plain English with its status, and many come with a possible cause and check steps.
- Live data: up to 180 values depending on the ECU, such as RPM, engine temperature, battery voltage, ignition timing, intake temperature, throttle, lambda and fuel pressure. You can record test rides.
- Component tests: ignition coils and injectors per cylinder, the fuel pump in three stages, plus button and input tests for the ECM and cluster.
- Resets and iBR: TPS reset, service reset, iBR status, iBR auto calibration and moving the iBR up and down.
- Keys (DESS): program new keys, change the key type (Normal, Learning, Rental) and delete keys, with up to 10 key slots. More on that in the post Key Management for BRP and Rotax.
- Special functions: transmission learning, ABS bleeding and cluster calibration, jobs you would otherwise take to the dealer.
- Vehicle data: VIN, model year, engine hours, odometer and next service. In the cluster you can set the language and greeting name.
- Vehicle configuration (CDID): with the Unlimited license.

Can-Am BUDS for the X3, Outlander and Spyder
A lot of riders search specifically for BUDS for the Can-Am X3, the Outlander or the Spyder. The typical case: the warning light comes on, the machine drops into limp mode, and you want to know whether you can keep riding. With the app you read the code right there in plain English, see whether it is active or stored, and check voltage, temperature and throttle in the live data. More on that on the Can-Am Limp Mode page. To find the connector, see Can-Am Diagnostic Connector.
Clearing a code is not a repair: if the cause is still there, the code comes back. Check battery voltage and connectors first. Run service functions, component tests and resets only with a stable power supply and according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Note: BRP, Sea-Doo, Can-Am, Ski-Doo, Lynx, Rotax and BUDS are trademarks of BRP. M-JET is an independent company and is not affiliated with BRP.
