Read Yamaha Outboard Engine Hours by RPM Range
The hour meter on the gauge tells you how long an engine has run. It doesn't tell you how. Three hundred hours of slow trolling are a different story from three hundred hours with the throttle pinned. The ECU logs operating time split into rpm ranges, and with M-JET DIAGNOSTIC you read that breakdown yourself.
The seven rpm ranges
- Under 1,000 rpm, meaning idle, maneuvering and trolling
- 1,000 to 2,000 and 2,000 to 3,000 rpm
- 3,000 to 4,000 and 4,000 to 5,000 rpm, cruising range on a lot of boats
- 5,000 to 6,000 and 6,000 to 7,000 rpm, where most Yamaha outboards hit wide-open throttle
How to read the hours
- Plug in the dongle and turn the key on
- Open engine hours in the app
- Write down or screenshot the hours for all seven ranges so you can compare later
- Check the total against the hour meter on the gauge. Small differences are normal, big ones need an explanation
What the breakdown tells you
A big share under 1,000 rpm means lots of idle time, typical for fishing boats, tenders or engines that run a lot in the marina. Lots of time in the top two ranges points to an engine that spent much of its life at the limit. Neither one is a deal breaker by itself. An engine that idled its whole life and rarely got properly warm has different issues than one that saw a lot of wide-open throttle. It gets interesting when the breakdown doesn't match the story someone tells you about the boat.
Used boats and twin engines
When you look at a used boat, the breakdown is a good conversation starter and a way to cross-check the listing. On boats with two or more engines you compare the engines against each other. If total hours are far apart, maybe one engine was replaced or one was used alone for slow running. Similar hours with a similar spread is what you'd expect on a well-kept twin. Lots of hours in the top ranges aren't a reason to walk away, but they are a reason to look extra closely at compression and spark plugs. For your own engine, take a screenshot once a season and over the years you'll see how you really run it.
Limits of the hour breakdown
The hours come from the ECU. If the ECU was swapped at some point, its count no longer matches the engine's age. Whether engine oil, gear oil, impeller and plugs were changed on schedule isn't stored in the ECU anyway. For that you need receipts or a service log. Whether your engine offers the rpm breakdown depends on its ECU, like every other function.
