Yamaha Outboard Idle Learning via App
After cleaning the throttle body or the ISC valve, the engine idles too high, too low or hunts up and down. Often the ECU is still working with learned values that fit the old, dirty condition. With M-JET DIAGNOSTIC you start idle learning yourself from the app, on many Yamaha outboards.
When idle learning makes sense
- after cleaning the throttle body or ISC valve
- after replacing the throttle body, TPS or ECU
- after work on the electronic throttle valve (ETV) on engines with digital throttle and shift
- when the idle hunts and you've already ruled out air leaks, ignition and fuel
Symptoms that point to idle
- Idle rpm noticeably higher than usual once warm
- Idle hunting by a few hundred rpm
- Engine stalls when you shift into gear
- Engine stalls when you come off the throttle quickly and drop back to idle
Which engines support it
Idle learning is available on many ECUs across all power classes, from the small F20 through the F150 and F250 up to the big V8s, plus the HPDI Z series. Whether your engine offers it still depends on its ECU. The app only shows the function when the ECU supports it. Not every symptom on the list above calls for idle learning. An engine that stalls when shifted into gear can just as well have an air leak or a fuel problem.
Check first, then learn
Idle learning doesn't cover up a fault. If the ECU reports an intake air leak, an intake hose is cracked or a coil is misfiring, the ECU learns the wrong baseline. So read the fault memory first and look at rpm, ISC valve opening in percent, throttle valve angle and intake pressure in live data. An ISC valve sitting unusually wide open at idle can point to a dirty throttle body. If it's nearly closed while rpm is high, that fits an air leak better. You can also fire the ISC valve on its own with the actuator test and listen for it working.
Conditions for idle learning
The engine should be at operating temperature, in neutral and running with plenty of cooling water, so in the water or in a test tank. Keep loads like the bilge pump, lights and cooler off so the electrical load stays steady. After learning, let the engine idle for a few minutes and watch rpm in live data. If it still hunts, the cause is somewhere else, usually air, fuel or ignition. Note idle rpm before and after, so you can see in black and white whether idle learning made a difference.
