Yamaha Outboard Rough Idle or Stalling: Checking the ISC and Relearning Idle

At the dock the engine shakes, rpm hunts up and down, and it stalls when you drop it into forward. Under load it runs clean. That pattern is common on fuel-injected four-stroke outboards, and it almost always comes down to idle air or a single cylinder. M-JET DIAGNOSTIC shows the idle values live, runs parts at the dock and, on many engines, can relearn idle.

Idle air and the ISC valve

On engines with a conventional throttle body, the ISC valve controls air at idle. The app shows its opening in percent. If the value sits at the top end all the time, the ECU is trying to make up for something, often a dirty throttle plate or an air leak. With the actuator test you trigger the ISC valve directly and listen for it to work. On engines with electronic throttle, the ETV handles that job, so you look at throttle valve angle at idle instead.

When idle learning helps

After cleaning the throttle body, replacing the ISC valve or disconnecting the battery, the stored idle value sometimes doesn't fit anymore. Many ECUs support idle learning, in every power class. But it only helps once the cause is fixed. With an air leak, the ECU simply learns the fault along with everything else.

What the fault memory says about it

  • Intake air leak, a dedicated entry on many ECUs
  • TPS out of spec
  • Atmospheric pressure, intake air temperature and thermo sensors
  • Overcooling, since an engine that won't warm up runs a richer mixture longer
  • OCV or cam timing faults on engines with VCT

Finding a cylinder that isn't pulling

If the engine only runs rough at idle, one cylinder is often weak. The actuator tests fire ignition coils and injectors one at a time or in pairs, depending on the engine. An injector that doesn't click or a coil with no response points you to the cylinder. On the HPDI Z series you also get the firing state per cylinder in the live data. On engines with variable cam timing, check the intake cam angle. In neutral it should sit at 10 degrees or less. If it's higher, run the OCV stationary test and check its screen.

What's left when the values look right

Fouled spark plugs, wrong valve lash, an intake gasket that only leaks when warm, or a partly clogged injector with no electrical fault. You find those with plug readings, a compression test and spray around the intake, not with the app. My order for rough idle: fault memory, ISC opening or throttle angle at idle, test cylinders one by one, fix the cause, then relearn idle.
