Yamaha WaveRunner Knock Sensor Fault
A knock sensor listens for combustion noise and lets the control unit retard the ignition before the engine is damaged. If it reports a fault, you can narrow down the cause with M-JET DIAGNOSTIC.
Where it is relevant
- On some models of the 1.8 and 1.9-litre series
- Fault code for the knock sensor with an irregular signal
- Live data on ignition timing and engine speed
- Data logger for rides at full load
Sensor fault or real knock?
An irregular sensor signal is often a wire or connector problem, for example from corrosion or chafing. Real knock usually has other reasons: poor or wrong fuel, too high intake air temperature or overheating. Use the data logger to watch whether ignition timing is retarded under load. That shows whether the control unit actually detects knock. If real knock is suspected, do not ride on but have the engine checked.
