Doing your own Sea-Doo Spark service is very manageable. The Rotax 900 ACE in the Spark and Spark Trixx has no oil drain plug, no air filter element and no drive belt. If you are shopping for a Sea-Doo Spark tune up kit, the core is oil, an oil filter, the filter cover O-ring and three spark plugs. Below are the specs, the order of work and the service reset with M-JET DIAGNOSTIC.
The values come from BRP documentation, mainly the operator's guides for the model years stated. Check the guide for your own craft, because BRP changed oil and some torque specs over the years.
What you need
- Oil change kit: oil, oil filter and the O-ring for the filter cover. Your dealer has the matching BRP oil change kit for the 900 ACE.
- Manual fluid extractor, drain pan, funnel, rags, gloves and safety glasses.
- E8 external Torx socket and ratchet for the filter cover screws.
- Torque wrench for low values in N·m or lbf·in.
- Garden hose for the flushing connector.
- For the plugs: NGK CR8EB or equivalent, spark plug socket, wire feeler gauge, anti-seize and the tools to remove the central body.
Which oil the operator's guide calls for
| Guide (model year) | BRP recommendation | Alternative |
|---|---|---|
| 2014 and 2016 | XPS 4-Stroke Synth. Blend (summer) or XPS 4-Stroke Synthetic (all climate) | synthetic 5W-40 or 10W-40 meeting API SN |
| 2019 to 2022 | XPS 4T 5W-40 Synthetic Blend | 5W-40 meeting API SJ, SL, SM or SN |
| 2024 | XPS 5W-40 Synthetic Blend, in warm temperatures XPS 10W-50 Synthetic | see your guide |
| 2025 and 2026 | XPS 0W-40 or 5W-40 synthetic | 4-stroke SAE synthetic oil meeting API SN or JASO-MA2 |
BRP says no oil additives. For other model years, follow your guide.
Service intervals
Whichever comes first applies. BRP lists no separate break-in oil change for the Spark.
| Job | Interval | Per guide (model year) |
|---|---|---|
| Replace engine oil and oil filter | every year or 100 hours | 2014 to 2026 |
| Replace spark plugs | every 2 years or 200 hours | 2019 to 2026 |
| Inspect and clean air delivery parts (ducts, hoses, clamps) | every year or 100 hours | 2026 |
| Inspect flame arrestor | every 2 years or 200 hours | 2019 to 2026 |
| Inspect and lube drive shaft and impeller splines | every 2 years or 200 hours | 2019 |
| Inspect and lube PTO sleeve, replace oil seal and both water seals (shop job) | every 200 hours, regardless of years | 2019 |
| Replace coolant (BRP says by a dealer) | every 5 years or 300 hours | 2022 to 2026 |
| Flush exhaust, rinse engine compartment | after every ride in salt or dirty water | 2026 |
| Anti-corrosion spray on metal parts, inspect anode | monthly in salt water | 2026 |
Oil change step by step
For the 900 ACE, BRP has you extract the oil through the dipstick tube:
- Park the Spark level and open the right rear access cover. The dipstick is behind it.
- Connect a garden hose to the flushing connector, start the engine, open the water and let it warm up. Out of the water it must never run longer than 2 minutes.
- Then run the engine for 10 seconds at 4,000 rpm and stop it with the tether cord.
- Pull the dipstick, push the extractor hose 400 mm (15.75 in) into the dipstick tube and extract the old oil.
- Crank the engine for 10 seconds with the throttle held and extract again. Repeat this cycle 2 to 3 times.
- Remove the 3 filter cover screws with the E8 socket, take off the cover and remove the old filter and O-ring.
- Fit the new filter and O-ring and torque the screws to 9 N·m ± 1 N·m (80 lbf·in ± 9 lbf·in).
- Add fresh oil through the dipstick opening. BRP guides do not agree on the refill amount, so add oil in stages and go by the dipstick.
- Check the level the way the 2026 guide describes it: craft level, flushing hose connected, engine at operating temperature, idle for 30 seconds, stop and wait at least 30 seconds. Unscrew the dipstick, wipe it, reinsert it fully and read it. The level must be between MIN and MAX.
- Do not overfill. Repeat the full check after every top-up.
Oil and engine are hot after the warm-up, so wear gloves and safety glasses.
Spark plugs and other items
The plugs on a Spark are well hidden. Per the operator's guide you first remove the central body and then the ignition coils, each held by one retaining screw. BRP says the central body must be lifted with a strap and a second person, never alone.
| Item | Spec | Per guide (model year) |
|---|---|---|
| Spark plug | NGK CR8EB or equivalent, 3 plugs | 2014 to 2026 |
| Gap | 0.70 to 0.80 mm (.028 to .031 in), do not adjust | 2014 to 2026 |
| Spark plug torque | 13 N·m ± 1 N·m (115 lbf·in ± 9 lbf·in) | 2014 to 2026 |
| Ignition coil retaining screw | 9 ± 1 N·m (80 ± 9 lbf·in) | 2022 to 2026 |
| Central body, self-tapping screws | 5.5 ± 0.5 N·m (49 ± 4 lbf·in) | 2022 to 2026 |
| Central body, M6 nuts | 3.5 ± 0.5 N·m (31 ± 4 lbf·in) | 2022 to 2026 |
The 2016 and 2019 guides list a different coil screw value, so on an older Spark check your guide. If the gap is out of spec, replace the plug instead of regapping it. Put anti-seize on the threads, start the plug by hand, then torque it.
Coolant
Check the level with the engine cold at the COLD mark on the expansion tank behind the left access cover. BRP recommends XPS Extended Life premix, alternatively a low-silicate, extended-life ethylene glycol premix (50/50) for aluminum engines. Do not mix grades. Replacement is a dealer job per BRP.
Flushing after salt water
After every ride in salt or dirty water: hose on the rear connector with the tap closed, start the engine, open the tap right away, run about 20 seconds at fast idle (4,000 to 5,000 rpm), close the tap, run 5 seconds at 5,000 rpm and stop. Never more than 2 minutes out of the water. Off-season prep is covered in winterizing your Sea-Doo.
Resetting the maintenance reminder with M-JET DIAGNOSTIC
When maintenance is due, the cluster shows the maintenance reminder or MAINTENANCE REQUIRED. The guides from 2016 on state that a person of your choosing may do the maintenance, which includes you. After the service, you reset the reminder with M-JET DIAGNOSTIC.
With M-JET DIAGNOSTIC you can run the service reset yourself: dongle in the diagnostic port, app connected via Bluetooth, service function. Use a stable power supply and follow the manufacturer's instructions. Details are in service reset on Sea-Doo, Ski-Doo and Lynx. While connected, run a quick check:
- Read the fault memory and see whether any code is active or only stored.
- Watch engine temperature, battery voltage and rpm in the live data while the engine runs on the flushing connector.
- After the plug change, check the ignition coils cylinder by cylinder with the component test.
If the check also turns up a fault on the reverse and brake system, see Sea-Doo Spark iBR problems.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Sea-Doo Spark have an oil drain plug?
No. BRP has you extract the old oil through the dipstick tube, with the extractor hose 400 mm deep.
How much oil does a Spark take for an oil change?
BRP guides do not give one consistent amount. Add oil in stages and go by the dipstick; the level must be between MIN and MAX.
Does a new Spark need a break-in oil change?
No. Per BRP the first oil change on a Spark is at 100 hours or one year, then every year or 100 hours.
