Buying a used Yamaha outboard, ordering parts, or wondering how old the motor on your transom is? It all starts at the ID label. Almost everything you need is on it, except a clear model year on newer engines. Here's where the label is, how to read the model name and serial number, and when the year code letter works. At the end we'll decode a WaveRunner HIN.
Where is the serial number on a Yamaha outboard?
The serial number label sits on the port side of the clamp bracket, the bracket that mounts the engine to the transom. Yamaha four-stroke owner's manuals say the same thing from the 2012 editions right through the 2026 editions. If it's dirty or faded, clean it carefully and take a photo for your records.
What's on the ID label
The current label shows the model name, for example F150XCA, and the identification number. The identification number has three parts:
- Prefix or engine code: three characters, for example 6CE, 63P or 6KF. It identifies the engine family.
- Transom height letter: it stands for the shaft length.
- Serial number: the individual number of that engine.
Yamaha US calls those three parts together the Primary ID (PID). You need all three for parts and service information, not just the serial number.
How to decode the Yamaha outboard model number
On North American models, the model name has followed a set pattern since 1991. First the engine type, then the horsepower, then letters for shaft length and features.
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| F | Four-stroke |
| LF | Four-stroke, counter-rotation |
| VF | V MAX SHO |
| T | High Thrust |
| Z | HPDI two-stroke |
| S / L / X / U | Shaft length 15 / 20 / 25 / 30 in |
| J | Jet drive |
Newer models add letters for starting method, control type and generation. A final letter, like the A in F150XCA, is read as the generation, not the year. That scheme isn't documented consistently, so when in doubt, go by the prefix code.
Yamaha outboard year code chart through 2005
On engines sold in the US and Canada, the last letter of the model name was the model year up to the 2005 model year. An F150TXRC, for example, is a 2004 model.
| Letter | Model year | Letter | Model year |
|---|---|---|---|
| N | 1984 | T | 1995 |
| K | 1985 | U | 1996 |
| J | 1986 | V | 1997 |
| H | 1987 | W | 1998 |
| G | 1988 | X | 1999 |
| F | 1989 | Y | 2000 |
| D | 1990 | Z | 2001 |
| P | 1991 | A | 2002 |
| Q | 1992 | B | 2003 |
| R | 1993 | C | 2004 |
| S | 1994 | D | 2005 |
Watch out for D: it shows up twice, for 1990 and for 2005. Use the model and the prefix code to work out which year fits.
From 2006 on: no more year letter
Starting with April 2005 production, which is the 2006 model year, the year letter was dropped. A 90TLRD became a 90TLR. Any letter between the horsepower and the starting or tilt code now marks a new model or generation, not a year.
There's no official guide for reading the production year off the label on newer engines. Some reportedly carry a manufacturing date stamp or sticker on the transom bracket, but that's only sparsely documented. The bill of sale, service records or a dealer lookup with the full identification number are more reliable.
Be careful with online charts that assign a year to a letter on the ID plate of engines sold outside North America. They contradict the North American model letters and could not be confirmed.
WaveRunner: how to read the HIN
The WaveRunner hull identification number (HIN, called CIN in EU manuals) has 12 characters and is on a plate on the aft deck. The Primary ID is on a plate inside the engine compartment, on the left side according to Yamaha US. The engine serial number is on a plate on the engine itself.
| Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 1-3 | Manufacturer code (YAM = Yamaha Motor Corp USA) |
| 4-8 | Serial number |
| 9 | Month of production (A = January through L = December) |
| 10 | Last digit of the production year |
| 11-12 | Model year |
Example from a 2026 FX owner's manual: US-YAMA0001G526. G is the seventh letter, so July. The 5 means 2025, and the last two characters give model year 2026. That WaveRunner was built in July 2025 and is a 2026 model. The US- prefix is the country code added on the EU version.
Faster: pull the vehicle data straight from the ECU
Labels go missing or get painted over, and after an engine swap they may not match the hull. M-JET DIAGNOSTIC for Yamaha shows the model and engine serial number, the SCC code and the ECM part number in the app, plus the ECU software version. No laptop needed. Here's what that looks like on a WaveRunner: WaveRunner engine serial number and ECM data.
When you buy used, compare the app data with the label. To check engine hours by rpm range at the same time, see buying a boat with a used Yamaha outboard: reading hours by rpm. For WaveRunners there's the 15-minute diagnostic check.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the serial number on a Yamaha outboard?
On the ID label on the port side of the clamp bracket. It's the last part of the identification number, after the prefix code and the transom height letter.
Can I tell the year from the serial number?
On North American models through 2005, the last letter of the model name tells you. For newer engines there's no reliable rule from the label. Ask a dealer with the full identification number, or go by the bill of sale and service records.
What does the C mean in a Yamaha outboard model code?
Through 2005, a C at the end means the 2004 model year. In newer names like F150XCA, the C is usually read as Command Link, meaning digital controls. That isn't confirmed for sure, so check the prefix code when in doubt.
