Doing your own Can-Am Maverick X3 service is very doable. The Rotax 900 ACE Turbo is a three-cylinder with a dry sump and hydraulic valve lifters, so there is no valve lash to adjust. A Maverick X3 tune up kit boils down to oil, an oil filter, new sealing rings and three spark plugs. This guide covers the Turbo, Turbo R, Turbo RR, X ds, X rs, X rc and MAX from 2017 to 2026, not the Maverick R with the 999T engine.
All values come from the BRP operator's guides for the model years stated; check the operator's guide for your own machine.
What you need for a Maverick X3 service
- Engine oil: BRP XPS 5W-40 for general use, 0W-40 synthetic for cold weather, 10W-50 synthetic for hot weather. If XPS is not available, a synthetic 4-stroke 5W-40 or 10W-50 that meets API SN or JASO MA2 (2019 to 2026 guides).
- Oil capacity: 3.5 L (3.7 US qt) with a filter change, the same in the 2017, 2019, 2025 and 2026 guides.
- Filter and seals: filter cartridge 420956123, filter cover O-ring 420230920, drain plug sealing ring 420552280. BRP part numbers from the 2022 parts catalog, they may have been superseded.
- Spark plugs: three, type depends on model year (table below).
- Gearbox oil: BRP XPS 75W-140 synthetic, or a 75W-140 API GL-5 synthetic.
- Front differential: BRP XPS 75W-90 synthetic, or a 75W-90 API GL-5 synthetic.
- Tools: torque wrench, spark plug socket, feeler gauge, drain pan, funnel, rags and gloves.
Maverick X3 service intervals
Whichever comes first applies. Severe use means heavy loads, long high-speed runs, commercial or rental use, deep mud and water.
| Item | Normal use | Severe use | Guide year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine oil and filter | every year, 100 h or 3,000 km | every 6 months, 50 h or 1,500 km | 2017, 2019, 2025 |
| Spark plugs | every 200 h or 6,000 km, regardless of calendar time | no separate value | 2025, 2026 |
| Spark plugs | every two years, 200 h or 6,000 km | no separate value | 2017 to 2019 |
| Engine air filter | inspect, clean or replace every year, 100 h or 3,000 km | clean every 6 months, 50 h or 1,500 km, replace yearly | 2019, 2025 |
| CVT (belt, pulleys, CVT air filter) | inspect and clean every year, 100 h or 3,000 km | more often in dust, mud and snow | 2025 |
| Gearbox oil | replace at 3,000 km and 6,000 km, then every two years, 200 h or 6,000 km | first changes at 1,500 km and 3,000 km | 2019, 2025 |
| Front differential | every two years, 200 h or 6,000 km | same as normal | 2025 |
| Coolant | test yearly, replace every 5 years or 12,000 km | no separate value | 2019, 2025 |
In miles, the 2025 guide lists 1,500 km as 900 mi, 3,000 km as 1,900 mi, 6,000 km as 3,700 mi and 12,000 km as 7,500 mi. Riding often at -13 °F (-25 °C) or colder without the engine warming up? BRP then recommends an oil change at least monthly (2025 guide).
Maverick X3 oil change step by step
There are two drain plugs, magnetic and secondary. Oil and filter always get changed together.
- Park on level ground and set the funnel between the drain holes and the skid plate.
- Remove both drain plugs and let the oil drain completely into the pan.
- Install both plugs with new sealing rings: magnetic drain plug 30 ± 3 Nm (22 ± 2 lbf·ft), secondary drain plug 15 ± 2 Nm (133 ± 18 lbf·in). These values are the same from 2017 to 2026.
- Remove the filter cover at the right rear of the engine and replace the cartridge. New O-ring on the cover, lightly oil O-ring and filter seal, cover screws 10 ± 1 Nm (89 ± 9 lbf·in) (2017 and 2025 guides).
- Add 3.5 L of engine oil.
- Check the level warm on level ground: start, idle at least 20 seconds, shut off. Unscrew the left rear dipstick, wipe it, screw it fully in, remove and read. Level at or near the upper mark, do not overfill (2025 and 2026 guides).
Spark plugs and other items
Spark plugs
| Guide year | Plug | Gap | Torque |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2017 and 2019 | 2017: NGK 97225 laser iridium or equivalent, heat-sink paste P12 on the threads | 0.8 mm (.031 in) | 11 Nm (97 lbf·in) |
| 2025 and 2026 | NGK LMAR9AI-8D | 0.7 to 0.8 mm (.028 to .031 in) | 11 Nm (97 lbf·in) |
The BRP plug for the Maverick X3 and X3 Turbo RR is part number 415130363 in the 2022 parts catalog, it may have been superseded. For years not in the table, go by your guide.
Gearbox
The gearbox also houses the rear drive, so there is no separate rear diff oil. Capacities differ between guides, so fill to the upper mark at the right rear level plug, not by volume. Change the oil warm. Magnetic drain plug with a new sealing ring 30 ± 3 Nm (22 ± 2 lbf·ft), level plug 5 ± 0.6 Nm (44 ± 5 lbf·in) (2019, 2025 and 2026 guides).
Front differential
Fill to the lower edge of the filler hole. Reference: 350 ml (11.83 US fl oz) for Smart-Lok (2019 to 2026), 400 ml (14 US fl oz) for Visco-Lok (2019 guide), so check which one you have. Filler plug 16.25 ± 2.75 Nm (144 ± 24 lbf·in). Take the drain plug torque from your own guide.
Air filter, CVT and coolant
The paper element sits at the left rear. Tap the dust out, no compressed air on the paper, and install the cover with TOP up. Wash the CVT air filter with mild soap and water and let it dry. Part numbers from the 2022 catalog: engine air filter 715900422, CVT air filter 706600148.
There is no fixed belt interval; the belt is checked during the CVT inspection. CVT cover screws 7 ± 0.8 Nm (62 ± 7 lbf·in), center top screw first, then in sequence, no impact gun. The belt arrow points forward. After a belt failure, clean the CVT, cover and air outlet.
Coolant: BRP XPS extended life premix. Capacity 6.9 L (1.82 US gal) in the 2025 and 2026 guides, 4.8 L (1.27 US gal) in the 2017 and 2019 guides. Check it cold at the reservoir MAX line.
Reset the maintenance reminder with M-JET DIAGNOSTIC
Per the 2017 guide, MAINTENANCE REQUIRED appears every 50 hours, per the 2019 guide every 100 hours. From 2025, the 4.5 or 7.6 inch display shows a maintenance icon instead.
You reset it with M-JET DIAGNOSTIC: plug the dongle into the diagnostic connector, pair it with your phone over Bluetooth and run the service reset. Then read ECM and cluster codes in plain language with status, and on the test ride watch live data like engine temperature, battery voltage, intake temperature and pressure. Setup help: connect your vehicle to M-JET DIAGNOSTIC.
Make sure the power supply is stable for resets and follow the manufacturer's instructions. Warning light after the service? See the Can-Am check engine light post.
Frequently asked questions
How much oil does a Maverick X3 take?

Do I need to adjust the valves on a Maverick X3?
No. The 900 ACE Turbo has hydraulic valve lifters, so there is no valve lash to set.
How do I reset the maintenance reminder?
With the service reset in the M-JET DIAGNOSTIC app, which also lets you check fault codes and live data in the same session.
