Doing your own Sea-Doo 1503 4-TEC service is the norm for many older skis, because the GTI 130 and 155, GTI SE, GTS 130, GTX 155, Wake 155, the GTX, RXP and RXT 215 and the RXP-X and RXT-X with 255 or 260 often have plenty of hours on them. The single most important point for the oil change: naturally aspirated and supercharged engines need different oil. If you are putting together a Sea-Doo tune up kit, plan for oil, an oil filter, the filter cover O-rings and new spark plugs. At the end you reset the maintenance reminder with M-JET DIAGNOSTIC.
The values come from BRP documentation, mainly the operator's guides for model years 2008 to 2019, each with its year stated. Check the operator's guide for your own craft before you start, because the 1503 was built for many years and BRP changed some specs.
What you need
- Oil: 3 L (3.2 US qt) for an oil change with filter per the 2010 to 2019 guides, grade to match your engine (table below).
- Oil filter and new O-rings for the filter cover. Your dealer has the filter and oil change kit and knows the current version.
- Fluid extractor, drain pan, funnel, rags, gloves and safety glasses.
- External Torx socket to fit the filter cover, ratchet and torque wrench.
- Spark plugs NGK DCPR8E, spark plug socket, feeler gauge and anti-seize.
- Garden hose for warm-up and flushing.
Which oil the operator's guide calls for
| Engine | Guide (model year) | BRP recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| NA 130 and 155 | 2008 | 10W-40 mineral or synthetic meeting API SM, SL or SJ |
| NA 130 and 155 | 2012 to 2016 | XPS 4-Stroke Synth. Blend (summer), alternative 5W-40 or 10W-40 meeting API SM, SL or SJ |
| NA 130 and 155 | 2019 | XPS 4T 5W-40 Synthetic Blend |
| Supercharged 215 and 255 | 2008 | XP-S 10W-40 mineral oil only |
| Supercharged 215, 255 and 260 | 2012 to 2016 | XPS Synthetic Blend or 10W-40 mineral oil for wet clutches (JASO MA) |
Critical on supercharged engines: never fully synthetic oil, because it impairs the supercharger slip clutch. For model years not listed here, follow your operator's guide.
Service intervals
It is whichever comes first, hours or years.
| Job | Interval | Per guide (model year) |
|---|---|---|
| Replace engine oil and oil filter | every 100 hours or 1 year | 2008 to 2019 |
| First oil change (break-in) | after 10 hours | 2008 |
| First oil change (break-in) | after 25 hours or 3 months | 2012 |
| First oil change (break-in) | after 50 hours or 1 year | 2014 to 2016 |
| Replace spark plugs (inspect at 100 hours or 1 year) | every 200 hours or 2 years | 2012 to 2019 |
| Replace supercharger clutch (215 and 260) | at 200 hours, regardless of years | 2014 to 2016 |
| Inspect air intake silencer | every 100 hours or 1 year | 2016 |
| Replace coolant | every 200 hours or 2 years | 2008 to 2012 |
| Replace coolant | every 300 hours or 5 years | 2014 to 2016 |
| Flush exhaust | after use in salt or dirty water | 2016 |
There is no serviceable air filter element. Break-in intervals only matter on a new engine.
Oil change step by step
The 1503 has no drain plug either. The oil is extracted through the dipstick tube, the same principle BRP describes for the newer ACE engines. The guide gives no hose depth for the 1503, so only backed-up numbers here:
- Park the craft level and connect the garden hose to the flushing connector.
- Start the engine, open the water right away and let it warm up. Never more than 2 minutes out of the water, and close the water before you stop the engine.
- Pull the dipstick, insert the extractor hose into the dipstick tube and extract the old oil.
- Open the filter cover and replace the filter and the cover O-rings.
- Reinstall the cover. The operator's guide gives no torque for the 1503 filter cover, so ask your dealer for the value.
- Add fresh oil; per the 2010 to 2019 guides it takes 3 L with filter.
- Check the level on the dipstick as described in the guide for your model year and top up in small amounts if needed.
Oil and engine are hot after the warm-up, so wear gloves and safety glasses.
Spark plugs and other items
Every 1503 uses the NGK DCPR8E or an equivalent per the 2008 to 2019 guides, in the 2019 guide with solid post. BRP changed the gap and torque over the years:
| Guide (model year) | Gap | Torque |
|---|---|---|
| 2008 to 2016 | 0.75 mm (.030 in) | hand tight plus 1/4 turn with a socket, anti-seize on the threads |
| 2019 | 0.80 to 0.90 mm (.031 to .035 in) | NA: 17 N·m ± 1 N·m (150 lbf·in ± 9 lbf·in) |
The spec table in the 2016 GTX/RXT guide lists 0.7 to 0.8 mm for the gap. Measure the gap with a feeler gauge before the plug goes in.
Supercharger clutch on the 215, 255 and 260
The supercharged engines have a slip clutch in the supercharger. In the 2008 to 2012 guides, the MAINTENANCE SUPERCHARGER message comes up every 100 hours or earlier, with the ECU deciding when. The clutch is then to be replaced by a dealer within 5 hours. The 2014 to 2016 guides call for replacement at 200 hours, regardless of years. If you buy a used 215 or 260, ask for proof.
Coolant and flushing
BRP specifies 50/50 ethylene glycol antifreeze with corrosion inhibitors for aluminum engines; newer guides name XPS Extended Life premix.
After riding in salt or dirty water, the 2016 guide has you flush the exhaust, and on supercharged models the intercooler too. On NA engines: start the engine, open the water right away, run for about 20 seconds at fast idle, 4,000 to 5,000 rpm, and close the water before stopping. Never more than 2 minutes out of the water. The 260 has its own procedure in the guide. Before the off-season, see winterizing your Sea-Doo.
Resetting the maintenance reminder with M-JET DIAGNOSTIC
When service is due, the maintenance reminder comes on or MAINTENANCE REQUIRED appears, shown as MAINT in the 2008 guide. After the service, you reset it with M-JET DIAGNOSTIC.
To reset the reminder with M-JET DIAGNOSTIC in the app: plug the dongle into the diagnostic port, connect via Bluetooth and run the service function. Use a stable power supply and follow the manufacturer's instructions. Resetting the Sea-Doo service reminder walks through it. While you are connected:
- Read the fault memory and separate active from stored codes.
- Check the live data: engine temperature, battery voltage, rpm and, on supercharged engines, intake pressure and intake temperature.
- After the plug change, test the ignition coils cylinder by cylinder with the component test.
If the craft reports an oil pressure problem after the oil change, Sea-Doo oil pressure fault codes helps you sort it out.
Frequently asked questions
How much oil does a Sea-Doo 1503 4-TEC take?
Per the 2010 to 2019 guides, an oil change with filter takes 3 L (3.2 US qt). Check the level on the dipstick afterwards.
Can I use synthetic oil in a 215 or 260?
Not fully synthetic. For the supercharged engines BRP lists XPS Synthetic Blend or 10W-40 mineral oil for wet clutches, because fully synthetic oil impairs the supercharger clutch.
What is the spark plug torque?
The 2008 to 2016 guides say hand tight plus 1/4 turn with a socket. The 2019 guide lists 17 N·m ± 1 N·m (150 lbf·in ± 9 lbf·in) for NA engines.
