Yamaha VXR: Knock Sensor Fault (Code 17)
Code 17 reports an irregular signal from the knock sensor on the VXR. It can be a wiring problem or real knock. M-JET DIAGNOSTIC helps you tell them apart.
What you look at
- Fault memory: is code 17 active or only stored?
- Ignition timing in the live data curve under load
- Intake air temperature (code 23) and engine temperature (code 15)
- Connector and wire of the knock sensor
Sensor fault or knock?
If ignition timing is noticeably retarded under load, the control unit really detects knock. Then fuel quality, temperatures and intake are the candidates. If ignition timing stays stable and the message comes anyway, it is mostly a wire or connector problem. If real knock is suspected, do not ride on but have the engine checked.
