A red icon pops up on the display and the buzzer goes off. The one thing you want to know: keep riding or head for shore? The answer depends on which warning it is, and to some extent on which display generation your WaveRunner has. Everything here comes from Yamaha owner's manuals, along with the model years each point is documented for.
Which display do you have?
- 2026 color displays (FX, VX, GP): a warning bar with icons, and tapping an icon shows details. The buzzer keeps going until you mute it or the cause is fixed. The manuals for the 2026 JetBlaster and Crosswave and the 2023 FX HO describe the warning bar too.
- Segment display on the 2024 EX and JetBlaster: indicator lights plus a WARNING light, and the buzzer usually runs in 30-second cycles.
- Older models like the 2014 VXS/VXR or the 2005 and 2006 FX HO: check engine is described the same way as on the EX, while overheating differs a bit.
The 2026 displays cover these warnings: fuel level, battery voltage, check engine, engine overheat, oil pressure, and other warnings such as communication errors or a maintenance interval that's been exceeded.
Yamaha jet ski warning symbols at a glance
| Warning | 2026 color display | 2024 EX / JetBlaster | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Check engine | Icon, intermittent buzzer | Check engine indicator and WARNING blink, intermittent buzzer for 30 seconds | Back off the throttle, head to shore, have it checked |
| Overheat | Overheat and warning icons, continuous buzzer, max rpm limited | Blinking with intermittent buzzer, after 5 seconds steady with continuous buzzer, buzzer off after 30 seconds | Check the pilot water outlet, clear the jet intake |
| Oil pressure | Icons, intermittent buzzer, max rpm limited | Oil pressure and check engine indicators and WARNING blink, intermittent buzzer for 30 seconds | Check the oil level, if it's fine see a dealer |
| Fuel | Fuel gauge turns red, intermittent buzzer | Lowest segment blinks, intermittent buzzer (EX: 30 seconds) | Fill up |
| Battery | Voltmeter turns red (FX and VX) | Lo or HI on the voltmeter | Have the charging system checked |
Check engine: a sensor or a short
Check engine is triggered by a sensor malfunction or a short circuit. On the 2024 EX and JetBlaster, once the engine is stopped, the hour meter and an error code alternate every 3 seconds. The 2014 VXS/VXR and 2005 FX HO manuals use the same description. What the codes mean is covered in the most common Yamaha WaveRunner error codes. If the warning goes out on its own later, the fault isn't necessarily gone, see the check engine light went out by itself.
Overheat and oil pressure: max rpm limited
With both warnings, the ECU limits maximum engine speed. On overheat, the 2026 color displays sound a continuous buzzer. On older models like the 2006 FX HO and 2014 VXS, you get an intermittent tone first, then a continuous one. Check first whether water is coming out of the pilot water outlet, and clear the jet intake. Weeds or a plastic bag are common culprits.
For oil pressure, the buzzer sounds intermittently. Check the oil level, and if it's fine, don't keep riding around: see a dealer. How to tell overheating, oil pressure and battery apart by the beeping is covered in beeping on the water: overheat, oil pressure or battery.
Fuel and battery
The low fuel warning doesn't kick in at the same point on every model. On the 2024 EX it's at about 8 L (2.1 US gal), on the 2014 VXS/VXR at about 18 L. For the battery, the voltmeter on the 2026 FX and VX turns red when voltage drops or rises significantly. The EX and JetBlaster show Lo or HI. Either way, have the battery and charging system checked.
Maintenance reminder after 50 hours
Once the engine has run more than 50 hours since the last service, the other warnings icon appears in the warning bar and the buzzer sounds intermittently. That's documented for the 2023 FX HO and the 2026 FX SVHO, VX, GP SVHO, JetBlaster and Crosswave. It matches the maintenance schedule for these models: initial service at 10 hours, then every 50 hours or 12 months, every 100 hours or 12 months, and every 200 hours or 24 months.
After the service, you reset the maintenance reminder with M-JET DIAGNOSTIC, and depending on the model a flush warning too. By the way, the owner's manuals we reviewed don't describe a separate flush reminder on the display. Flushing only shows up there as a procedure.
Warning gone doesn't mean fault gone
The buzzer stops once the cause is fixed and you restart the engine, or when you press the mute or OK button. Muting doesn't fix anything, though. With M-JET DIAGNOSTIC for Yamaha you read the fault memory in the app, see the codes in plain language with possible causes and repair steps, and watch live data like engine and water temperature, battery voltage and rpm. Only clear the memory once the cause is sorted out. More on Yamaha WaveRunner check engine light on.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the red warning light flashing on my WaveRunner?
On the EX and JetBlaster, the WARNING light blinks together with check engine, oil pressure or overheat. The indicator that blinks with it points you in the right direction. The exact reason is in the fault memory.
How do I reset the warning light on a Yamaha WaveRunner?
Fix the cause and restart the engine, and the warning goes out. Clear stored codes with the app after the repair. Reset the maintenance reminder with M-JET DIAGNOSTIC after the service.
Why does my WaveRunner beep with no obvious fault?
Typical candidates are the maintenance reminder after more than 50 hours and the low fuel warning. Check the warning bar and tap the icon, and the display shows the details.
