If you're searching for Yamaha YDIS 1, you probably saw a 01 or a 1 on a display, or read about it on a forum, and you want to know if it's a fault. The short answer for outboards: code 01 means no malfunction. But the term gets used for two different things that are easy to mix up: a reading on the gauge and a version of Yamaha's dealer software. Here we sort out both, and we'll also tell you where there's no reliable information.
Code 01 on an outboard gauge: no malfunction
On Yamaha's 6Y8 Command Link outboard gauges, round or square, you enter diagnosis mode by holding the button for 10 seconds. If the round gauge shows -01-, there's no malfunction. On the square gauge, 01 appears for 3 seconds and then the display returns to normal.
Any other code means the engine can't run normally. Then it's time for a dealer, or you read out the cause yourself and decide from there.
Code 1 on the diagnostic flash indicator
Yamaha outboard service manuals also list diagnosis code 1 on the diagnostic flash indicator as normal, meaning no trouble. That's documented for the 200 hp models from 2005 and the 225 and 250 hp models from 2004 to 2005, for example, and in a 2017 service manual. A 1 there is nothing to worry about.
Easy to confuse: 01 in the settings mode
On the round 6Y8 gauge, the settings mode also has menu items numbered 01, such as the one for display units. You get there with the same button, just a shorter press. Let go too early and you can end up there instead of in diagnosis mode, then mistake a menu number for a code. For diagnosis mode, hold the button the full 10 seconds.
YDIS 1: the dealer software version
YDIS is Yamaha's diagnostic software, intended for dealers. Yamaha itself talks about the Version 1 series, not YDIS 1. The Version 1 series, for example 1.33, connects via K-Line only. Version 2.00 adds CAN-Line. The two aren't interchangeable. Which version covers which model years is stated differently on forums, and that isn't reliably documented.
The software version has nothing to do with what your gauge shows. So when someone on a forum writes about YDIS 1, they may mean the software or the 01 on a display. Ask before you draw conclusions from it.
What about Yamaha WaveRunner error code 01?
A lot of YDIS 1 searches come from WaveRunner owners with a GP, an SVHO or a VX. We have to be straight here: we found no Yamaha documentation for a display code 01 on a WaveRunner. So we can't say for sure whether a 01 on your model also means no malfunction. Don't guess, read it out.
The reliable way is to look at the fault memory. M-JET DIAGNOSTIC for Yamaha shows stored codes in plain language with possible causes and repair steps, on WaveRunners and outboards alike. If nothing is stored, you see that right away. If something is, you know where to start. How to do it without a laptop is in reading fault codes without a laptop, step by step. For outboards there's reading Yamaha outboard fault codes yourself.
When something other than 01 shows up
If the gauge shows another code, the engine warning blinks or the buzzer goes off, it's no longer a confirmation but a real message. What the buzzer and warning lights on an outboard mean is explained in Yamaha outboard beeping: alarm buzzer and warning lights explained. Code meanings can differ between ECU generations, so the plain-language text in the app is worth more than a list from the internet. Why you don't need dealer software for that: dealer tool or your own tool.

Frequently asked questions
Is code 01 a fault on a Yamaha?
Not on the 6Y8 outboard gauge. There, 01 in diagnosis mode means no malfunction. For WaveRunners there's no reliable documentation, so your best bet is to read the fault memory.
How do I reset a Yamaha YDIS 1 code?
If the outboard shows 01, there's nothing to reset. If other codes are stored, track down the cause and then clear the fault memory with the app.
Do I need YDIS to read fault codes?
For reading and clearing fault codes, live data and vehicle data, M-JET DIAGNOSTIC with its dongle and app is all you need. No laptop required.
